Update on '86SPG w/pressurized crankcase- head gasket??? Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Background: Drove from Kingston to Albany (NY) on Saturday evening for some ale & backgammon. Nice easy drive, good tunes, no hint of anything wrong. On Sunday, when I went to start the car, It cranked longer than normal and ran rough when it caught. I popped the hood and checked the vacuum lines- everything ok. When I started checking the fluids, I noticed that there was oil which had sprayed from the top of the dipstick tube on the throttle body and hoses, etc. The oil was 1 1/2 quarts low, so I tried to add some more while the car idled. SPLOOSH!!! The car spit it right back out at me. Alarmed and nervous, I left the car in Albany and headed home to Kingston.
The consensus of this BB and my mechanic(s) was that it might be a cracked/blown piston or ring. Last night I drove back up to the car, and checked some stuff out. 1st- PCV checkvalve. I could easily blow through it. Oh, well... That would have been too easy.
2nd. I pulled out the sparkplugs and looked around. #1 was oil-fouled, #2 was ok, #3 was ok, #4 was slightly oil-fouled. The piston crowns seemed intact, with approximately the same amount of carbon on each. #1 looked slightly wet (I can imagine that the plug had gotten too fouled to fire)
I added a quart of oil to bring the level up to just over the min. line on the dipstick. I tried to wipe the oil off the plugs, replaced them, and started the motor.
It cranked hard, and caught. Still running rough. I could hear the lifters clattering. When I pulled the dipstick out, puffs of smoke came shooting out like the exhaust on a 1-cylinder motorcycle. The oil stayed in the crankcase, however. I replaced the dipstick, and revved the throttle a little. The exhaust had hints of smoke (maybe steam), but wasn't billowing clouds. Smelled about the same as always.
This afternoon, I reported back to my mechanic(s), and when they heard that it was cylinder #1, they both seemed quite confident that the head gasket was leaking pressure into the oil passages and/or timing chain cavity.
Does this sound about right? I'm going to try to find a mechanic in Albany (I've got references, and New Salem Garage is an expensive, reliable plan B) to avoid towing charges and the 3-week wait at my usual shop.
PS- How many hours for a head gasket replacement?
