Remember that the energy of impact (weight of the car) was almost totally dissipated in a forward or rolling momentum. With respect to a vertical drop the suspension only took a fraction of the of the car's weight. I believe this is why it did not bottom out nor was there any damage or scrapping to the underside. Scrapping under the nose is different. The Viggen is nose heavy and on an undulating road under high speed and cornering I have touched the bottom of the plastic nose piece. Afterwards I did drive it to Phoenix (200+ miles at speeds as high as 100+ mph). No vibration, no handling quirks, nothing. Was absolutely perfect. Also, don't know if I can draw this conclusion, but on my 82 Turbo had some alignment problem that was eventually corrected and it tremendously affected the mpg. The Viggen maintained the same mpg at various speeds as always. Therefore, tend to believe service at Saab dealership after inspection that nothing was wrong. Note that I was present with service personnel during inspection and asked and received answers/explanations to all questions, etc. In conclusion I'm convinced that Saab (Viggen) is one heck of a durable automobile. On the other hand I would have expected a different result if the car had been just been dropped vertically 3 ft.
