Poll: would there be interest in better quality polyurethane Posted by bryan [Email] (#542) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bryan) on Tue, 31 Jul 2001 16:46:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
bushings for saab cars? I'm the sales manager for a custom polyurethane manufacturer, was just wondering if there would be a demand for much higher quality bushings, etc.
The urethane suspension components you can currently buy are better than rubber, but to be honest, as far as urethane systems go, they're pretty much junk, i.e. cheap single stage materials that can be hand mixed. I would use a catalyzed MDI system that would A) cost about three times as much as what is currently available B) offer much greater durability, rebound, tear resistance, you name it.
Or hey, maybe the currently available materials are satisfactory enough.
Comments welcomed.
Oh, one other possibility is making a poly A-pillar gauge cluster. It would be heavy, but one of the advantages of working with polyurethane is it's so easy to make molds for, and therefore very inexpensive to get going. Downside is if you're in large scale production the raw materials are about 800% more expensive than an injection molded thermoplastic. At some point you will amortize your tool costs, I wouldn't expect to make more than a few dozen anyway for saabnet people.
If you have an existing part or a pattern, we can just cast molds from that. Patterns can be made from just about anything too, wood, anything that will survive 250 deg. F for a couple of hours. Also we know exactly how much the mold shrinkage is going to be and can compensate for that as well. The finished parts are sandable and paintable as well.
IS there a demand for A-pillar gauge mounts? I'm a 9K driver myself but would probably want to offer it for a C900's, sure a lot of 'em out there (relatively).
