Independently Actuated Valves

Is there such a thing as an engine that uses a set of independently controlled actuators (I guess they'd have to be highly fast and accurate) to move the valves, eliminating the cams altogether? Wouldn't that provide a great deal of tweaking ability and be less parasitic than spinning cams?
Sorry it's not really related to Saabs specifically...just curious on the topic
