had a dyno run yesterday that pretty much pointed out i had timing issues. all 6 of my runs yielded very "bumpy" power curves all the way up through, the best run resulted in a max hp of 175 at the wheels. the first run (and the best) was with msd btm set so max retard was 9.5 btdc at 13.5 psi. apc max boost set at 15-16psi. then attempted to tweak up boost a bit (to 18-19psi) and got serious solenoid clatter (resulting in heavy boost fluctuation), also noted on the power curve. increased retard a bit on btm and ran again, boost set the same. again, got clatter and stopped. could not seem to get it dialed in so i could make a clean run again. same story with my last few runs. even went so far as to add octane booster to keep boost steady and constant, never could. is there a chance i'm picking up false knock signals? running spg9 stage 1 apc, do they increase knock sensitivity? i never once actually heard pinging, just the solenoid, but i guess that's what it is designed for.
last night i disconnected the msd btm and put back in an unmodified stock distributor unit, set initial timing back to 16 btdc and set boost around 15 psi. a little more sluggish off the line, but power transition seemed a lot smoother. although, once on the highway, i was able to have the solenoid clatter again and kick back boost. i think i am leaning more towards a false signal coming from somewhere. any ideas?
finally, today, hooked msd back up, set initial timing to 18 btdc and boost at 15-16 psi. went for a run on the hwy. in 5th gear, couldn't pull more than 12 psi without apc kicking back. but up to 5th, i was pulling 15-16psi. wtf? i'm pulling my hair out wondering why it's not performing like it should. i only have 10k miles on this engine that was rebuilt w/ new pistons, bearings, etc, all the way up to head work, cams, turbo, and injectors (30lbs). my fuel curve on the dyno looked really good, right where it should be, but power was just not there. any thoughts, comments?
anyone want to buy a gutless beast?
