that they're not especially accurate, if you're looking for a number that is the 'true' measure. They are, however, very repeatable, i.e. they will give accurate RELATIVE info.
As far as when it's OK to start romping on it, an oil temp of 180 deg. for synthetic or 190 deg. for dinosaur juice is considered normal operating temp.
Just make sure the oil temp. is stable more than anything vs. the actual temperature.
