Turbo cool down period

I'm running 1.4 bar (21psi) max boost in my 9-3, and after driving hard, the turbo and manifold are visibly glowing red at night. This also happened with my previous 15psi setup, just not so often.
I know the turbo should be left to cool down before switching the car off, but I don't know how long this period of time is supposed to be. I generally wait untill it stops glowing -is this safe or should I wait longer?
