The lump in question looks like it was intended to protect a sensor
(EGT ?) in the manifold. There is a boss there (downstream of the bump)
but it is not drilled out. Since I don't have the sensor to protect, I
can't see any reason not to grind it out. It sure looks like a significant obstruction.
As for ceramic coating, I didn't really consider that; this manifold has
156k mi on it, so I don't know if its worth pouring any $$ into. I am
thinking about ceramic coating the piston domes, though. Not nearly as
pricey as I imagined, and seems to make good thermodynamic sense.
