That turned out to be it. The timing, that is.
I replaced the hall effect connector to the distributor with a salvaged harness from the recyclers. Had to solder the four wires coming off the ignition module, but more importantly, kept the shielded triple wire that goes from the module to the distributor in one piece. Test drive - still with the misfire.
Scratched my head, thought I should muck about with timing. I put the vacuum advance unit stop in again, previously had completely removed it, and thus gave about 3 BTDC under boost. With it back in, I test drove - and shudder free to redline! Woohoo!
Now to tidy up the wiring...
