Just painted stock calipers (more) Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Dude! Sweet! I see the Forge peeking out there, too. What >>, Talladega900, Sat, 18 Aug 2001 22:42:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I disassembled but did not break the lines. A couple of good quality wire brushes (a small toothbrush sized proved to be most effective) and Simple Green seemed to work the the best of the two types of brake cleaner, WD-40, and Castrol Degreaser I tried. Great stuff, and it won't kill you like brake cleaner. The paint is Plastikote brand 'Brake Caliper Paint', I've seen it in pretty much every auto parts store I've been in lately.
Final clean up with some brake cleaner and wiped down with lacquer thinner, hand the carriage with a zip tie, masked off the hoses and anything that wasn't supposed to be painted, and let 'em rip. The coverage on this type of paint is pretty poor, it definitely works best if your first couple of coats are just to 'spatter' it and give later coats something to hang onto. For something out of a rattle can, it seems to be pretty tough and has cleaned up well on a couple of occasions.
The Zimmerman rotors I purchased purely for aesthetics, they are basically the same price as OEM. I don't *really* drive the car hard enough to ever get into a situation where fade would be potential issue.
With Metal Masters, it does seem to take a little warm up, first couple of miles on cold brakes and it feels like you have NO brakes. When warm, they combo provides very sure, fast hard stops. Coming back from Vegas last weekend I had to get on the brakes pretty hard at around 90 mph and it hauled down to a stop in a very short distance without getting into the ABS. One thing about the Zimmerman/Metal Master combo is it takes a LONG time (300+ miles) to break the everything in...I was a little concerned during the first hundred miles or so, you could tell the pad wasn't sitting in squarely and was only touching the rotor in a few spots. I disassembled and reapplied anti sieze to the carriers and double checked everything to be sure. Everything got better though and by 1000 miles it stops great. If you're going to stay with stock diameter wheels, I can't imagine a better value in brakes. In a larger diameter wheel, those stock diameter rotors start to look pretty wimpy.
Next braking upgrade will probably be the SAS stainless steel braided line kit, then from there just keep it all working well...Oh, and clean :D
The Sumitomo HTRZII's are proving to be a great dry tire, and at 80 bux a throw, a great value as well. Quiet, VERY grippy and great handling. Downside seems to be somewhat fast wear (treadwear rating is only 220), but, this car is not a daily driver and when it IS driven, i'm sure the um.....'spirited' fashion it gets driven in doesn't help :) Very cool looking tread, I've caught a couple people looking at them while parked. Don't have any wet feedback and don't plan to, unfortunately.
Also the wheels were straightened (two bent), polished, painted, AND the tires mounted and balanced for 65 bux PER WHEEL. Best deal i've gotten in a loooooong time, only downside was slow turnaround (10 days) but the car was in the air for that time anyway. The vendor on that was:
