shifter is same height as stock actually Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Custom 3" turbo back system, pics, Ryan ![]() |
When I was rehabbing the car, the stock leather shift knob was pretty thrased, plus missing the 1-2-3-4-5-R emblem. Dealer wanted 78 bux for a replacement, which is what led me to explore my own options.
The actual knob is one of those Type R Euro (I know, I know) that you get from the places that specialize in coffee can exhausts, Weapon R stickers, and huge spoilers. I had to have the hole drilled out to have it fit over the saab shifting rod.
The aluminum shaft sleeve is just a piece I had made for 20 bux, it slides down over the stock shift rod and gives the factory leather boot the same mounting height and diameter. I just trashed all the reverse lockout pieces, I can usually remember where reverse is :) BTW, trying to find a decent leather boot for less than 40 dollars was a challenge, which is what made reusing the factory boot more appealing.
Overall it looks pretty nice, and I'd *like* to think that shifting has been enhanced. The factory shift rod is pretty wimpy and flexy, the aluminum sleeve stiffened that up considerably, and the solid aluminum shifter knob add a lot more mass than the factory leather coated plastic knob, so it seems to 'follow thru' better. It definitely feels good in your hand, assuming the car hasn't been in the sun :D
