I got this idea from Dave N some time ago(http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/performance/index.html?bID=10125)
I´ve been thinking to try to make less restrictive intake for my 900 and still keep the original airbox. I´ve had open cone filter (JR), but I didn´t like results: too loud intake noise (IMHO of course, some might even like that !) poor off-the-line performance on a hot day at city traffic driving. So I´ve used stock box (with K&N), but I hate that when I´ll need to clean the filter, there is just this tiny small circular area that needs to be cleaned and everything else is still clean.
Okay, there is about 25mm gap between IC & fender wall what Dave thought could be used as an air intake. Sometime ago I modified my air box so that there is about 100*150mm hole on the side and made some air guides from rubber mat, to keep hot engine air off and get intake cold as much as possible. I´ve been driving with box like this few weeks and I like the results. Not too noisy, nothing for performance though, but I believe that it has to be colder air there, especially when driving on a highway speed. No difference on a city traffic driving.
Pics are not that good, but you should get the idea.
Any comments?
Marko
