An integral wastegate is cheaper than an external one.

By law, a road vehicle with a descrete wastegate must return all of the vented gases back to the exhaust and before the cat converter. So the added high temp piping is expensive and often there is little room to do this properly. The gases must be introduced back into the exhaust stream with proper attention to angle and transistions, otherwise the re-merging flow can upset the overall flow and create significant back pressure and performance losses.

Which brings us to integral wastegates. Much cheaper to execute, not added plumbing, compact... But, the wastegate's bypass flow re-enters the main flow at 90 degress just after the turbine discharge. At high CFM's this can cause a droop in boost pressure. CHOKE!

So the main benefit of an external wastegate is not having an integral wastegate!
