ok, just got back from picking up my new set up. actually, back from dinner and wine, but... anyway, the wife asked what i would like for the birthday, so, i initially said, "an engine management system like sds". well, the price was a little steep for her. and two leather recaro seats were out as well, so... i said, how about a new down pipe and cat? ok. dropped it off this morning. battery was moved to the trunk two weeks ago for more room. still need to address the radio noise issue (run extra cable to battery and dist block). but, these guys took out the stock down pipe and cat, and replaced with new. 3" high flow cat, nice easy bend off the turbo, 2 1/2" to pass the mounting studs, immediately into 3", then bend down, into 3 1/2", back to 3", into 3" cat, taper into stock cat back for now. ( will do rest of it later) results, o2 sensor ruined with break free solvent (no big deal). turbo spools amazingly quick. but, i have shifted my bottleneck down to just past the cat. once i clear that up, it should be good. however, before the mod, i had the apc dialed in about 15 psi, with msd set to max retard of 9-9.5 dbtdc at max pressure of 14.5-15psi (as set by pressure reg valve). after the mod, on the way home, i stepped on it and the boost climbed to 18-19 psi and held steady, no knock. so, i backed off retard on msd, still boosted same and more power, again, same results, eventually reached predet, have to reset with hand pump, but somehow this down pipe is allowing higher boost without predet. maybe cooling the exhaust gases quickly enough to get heat away from the engine? who knows. i like it, and it will get better with accurate dialing in. to be done this weekend. i'll leave apc setting as is, adjust reg valve to 13-14psi and set max retard for 10 or so. initial timing around 19.5-20. it is pulling harder, but, like i said, it's not dialed in yet, so i'll hold out on making final claims. btw, the wine may be talking now. we'll see what this post looks like in the morning. laters...
