As said earlier, gear are basically levers. For each gear, the bigger the number the more mechanical advantage you have. Increased mechanical advantage (higher torque at the wheels in this case) allows for faster acceleration. The downside to this increased mech. advantage is you go slower at a particular engine speed versus a higher gear (duh!!!).
What do the numbers mean? Let's use some easy numbers for an example.
First gear: 4:1 ratio (this means the input rotates 4 times for every 1 rotation of the output shaft)
Second: 3:1
Third:2:1
Final drive: 5:1 (this is the gearing in the differential)
All cars have a differential so the car can go around corners without the inside wheel hopping (the outer wheel needs to rotate faster than the inside wheel)
What do these numbers mean?
In first gear, the output to the wheels will spin slower than the input speed from the engine. How much? (First gear ratio)*(final drive) So in first gear, at an engine speed of 4000 rpm the output shaft speed is 4000/[(4)*(5)]=200. The plus side is that the torque to the wheels (which is what accelerates the car) is 20 times higher than the engine's torgue output.
Engine speed=4000 rpm
output shaft speed:
first 200
second 267
third 400
forth 800
