The Koni shocks at the front are a cartridge. However, the struts are not designed to take a cartridge - you need to cut the tops off (the Konis are designed specially for this strut modified in this way).
You could replace the shocks without the springs if you wished. One of my old springs was sagging. The Abbott springs lower the car a bit. Mine lowered 22mm, but others have had different experience. You could also get a Bilstein kit, which comes with complete struts, I believe. It lowers the car 40mm (too much for me) and I'm told is very harsh.
I have replaced many of the bushes (poly control arm bushes this weekend) and it isn't too hard to do. Steering rack bushes require taking out the rack. New rubber (or poly) will make a world of difference to a car that feels old (mine has 152K miles). While you have the front end apart you might as well replace the balljoints and tie-rod ends. At 180K, if you're taking out the steering rack, you might want to simply fit a reconditioned one.
