When I replaced my stock springs with some aftermarket ones I too noticed the large diference in free length! (the rears were the same give or take 1/2 an inch). They lowered the car dramaticaly at the front but I still had to use spring compressors to get them in. I had to cut the bumpstops at the first section as it was about 1/4 of an inch above the spring plate! I have had no problems with A arms fouling anything or wheels rubbing the arches. It just handles a lot better ! albeit a bit harsher on rough roads. (replaced the shocks as well with the OE Sachs/Boge for the SPG/sports suspension)
