wn=(k/m)^.5 => natural frequency, k=spring rate, m=mass
springs are sized based on car's sprung weight, but the wheel/tire will respond quickest to bumps, etc, if the natural freq of the the unsprung parts (wheel, tire, etc) is kept high. so in the above eq'n, u want to have a low m or mass for the unsprung parts.
translation is it's a lot easier to get light unsprung parts to follow a rough road than it is to get heavy parts. going fast thru a bumpy corner, a mustang's solid and heavy rear axle will bounce into oversteer, while a vette's independent rear will stay connected to the ground better.
