measure incremental drum speed and time changes, then calculate torque which is same at drum and car wheel (T=Ixw). So torque is found before hp.
Hp by wheel to drum is then figured by knowing instant torque and drum rotational speed. It can then be plotted to car speed since that is same as drum surface speed. Torque could have been plotted vs road speed too.
As you noted, eng rpm measurment is needed for variables to be plotted to eng rpm. But, SAABPOWER could rough this out by getting a correction factor for road speed vs rpm for his test gear.
