Good idea get a good tune up, go to http://www.spg9.com and get a K&N air inlet kit, ($80) roughly, also, there was a post just a little below this on a guy asking what some good mods were for his car, I think they mentioned tweaking your APC, and adding the 3.0 bar fuel pressure regulator.
My car wan't running great, and certainly wasn't very fast, so I took it to my mechaninc and left it for a few days. He replaced the mass air censor, hooter valve, a few cracked &leaking vacuum lines, changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and all the fluids and it came back running like a champ. You'll be suprised at what a good tune up can do :)
I myself am on a limited budget also, my future mods will inlcude: SPG9 apc, 3.0 bfpr and maybe an exhaust sometime. we'll see!
Hope this helps, but remember, I'm only a Rookie! :)
Take care!
