I've recently moved from 900's to VW Corrados. the g60 Corrado came stock with a scroll-type supercharger. I know of a handful of people that are adding a turbo to the stock setup.

The thinking is this:

When tuning a car that is turbocharged, a bigger turbo makes more power. But, the bigger the turbo, the more lag you get, so boost doesn't happen till high in the rev range.

When you are tuning a supercharged car (at least as far as the g60 Corrado is concerned) swapping a smaller pulley on the charger gives you more boost. But, this revvs the charger much higher than it's design point, so it is unreliable.

The advantage that superchargers have is that the boost is instant. Floor it at any point, and you get boost. No waiting for spool. But, superchargers don't behave well if pushed too high at high rpms - they heat up the intake air a ton, and they also don't last long.

So, why not have the best of both worlds. A supercharger and a turbocharger. That way, you get the instant boost of the supercharger down low. And up high, you can have your huuuuge turbo all nice and spooled up. You can even use a clutch on the supercharger to disengage it above a certain rpm to save it from extra wear.

Anyways, I think this combo would be a decent solution - you get power everywhere, since both units are operating at their best. Maybe not the end-all if you are looking for ultimate power, but doing this would give you much better driveablity than a singe huge turbo.

PS - this is my first post on Saabnet after about 6 months away. Glad to still see some of the same old crew bumming around here.
