I pulled the engine and stripped it down last Thursday and drove it PAECO on Friday. The guy who built the engine (not Carl the owner) helped me unload it. I explained the situation and how unhappy I was with the finished product. We pulled the head and found where the copper head gasket failed to seal as it pertained to coolant. We then removed one of the pistons, man there was pools of oil in every cylinder. He identifed the problem immediately...I hope. The ring land on the piston for the oil rings had a gap of .038". Apparently, the gap is supposed to be .003-.005" So much of the "120 checks" PAECO does when puttin together engines. Anyway, their getting new oil rings. Instead of having them make another copper head gasket, I'm going to order one from Swedish Dynamics. I also told the guy that I would come down on a weekend and help him with the engine....clean it, spec it, put it back together, etc. At least this way I can see what's going on and compare it a checklist my mechanic is putting together for me. No wonder PAECO has a bad rep. It seems Carl just doesn't give a crap. It's to bad, since they get orders from around the world. They had a 300ZX engine from Indonesia sitting there for a rebuild. If they did things right, I imagine it could be a lucrative business. I suppose that's no different than any other business.
