blew IC pipe, now erratic... what to check? (long)

Hey guys, this started in the classic arena when I thought I blew my headgasket... the white smoke was just "fuel" being burned the man says...
Here's the situation... driving, mod boost, low rpm... top IC hose blows, reattach, car still dies. Inspect all hoses, all is tight, still, car turns and dies.
Took it to the garage, they call me up the next day "we can find nothing wrong with your car."
So I got it back... boost is anything but linear (I guess more log), skips a bit, poor power curve, boost is there on my gauge, but sure doesn't feel like it.
Also, upon decel, there is a LOT more vacuum... used to never go below 20 inches of HG, now it drops to about 24-26 before stcking to about 20 again.
All the hoses look fine... nothing torn.
Could the timing have been messed up with the blow? Maybe the by-pass-valve? I and my mechanics are at a loss.
thanks
martin
