There are basically 2 ways to form the basic block of aluminum that will become a piston.
The first is by making a mold and casting the piece[blank]. This is cheap and quick and leaves you with a basic normal aluminum structure.
The forged piston blank is hammered out by huge hydralic hammers[picture a blacksmith only a few thousand times more powerfull] This blank although more expensive to produce is a stronger piece because the aluminum has been hammered into a more compact molecular structure.
The blank is then machined into it's final piston form[pistons are not round, nor are they straight up and down because they are machined to be round when they are running in a warm engine and since parts of the piston are thicker than others and parts get more heat than others they are machined accordingly, Sort of a barrel shape]
In any case when they are done you can have 2 identical pistons that will perform the same But the forged piston will be more durable.
