coolant hose clamps

I know that folks on this BB have years of repair and mod experience.
So anyone else have problems with factory gear clamps stripping, or not creating a leak tight joint on reused hoses.
I find that the flatter rigid part of the gear mechanism is preventing a good seal on smaller hoses when the old hose is reused, even if the clamp is placed in the same postion on the hose as orignal. I also see signs of leaking when small hoses are removed. So even with new small hoses, the performance seems poor. There were sings of seepage which create an amber plastic like deposit on the aluminum. Larger hoses do not have this problem as the flat rigid area does not create problems at larger OD's.
The gear type type clamps with slots in the strap can cut the hose material and the hose material can extrude through these slots. But smaller units do seem to have better curvature at the gear mechanism.
Anyone have any recommendations for good alternatives?
