Just got the new MSD Ignition catalog in and was curious if anyone’s familiar with their products. I’m looking to upgrade to a MSD unit and it’s been awhile since I’ve used them. The last time was on my ‘ol 1835CC volks about ten years ago. I had a lot of problems with Jacobs ignition system after about a year of use, and upgraded to a MSD unit with great results. Aaron Gilbert, I’ll be curious to see what happens with your Jacobs system. Maybe Jacobs has improved over the years. But I do have several questions: Noticed in the MSD catalog they suggest using tower adapters for the dist. cap to ensure the 8.5mm wires fit the stock cap. Is this needed? I’ve read several people using 8.5mm wires and was wondering if you needed to install the adapters. I think there’s a 900T owner on the performance BB that is using the MSD 6TM system, with a remote boost retard/advance control and a power blaster coil. Sounds like a good set up, although for my stock application (I may upgrade my APC later) I’m not convinced it’s needed. My ‘88 does have very limited room to mount the unit, although I have figured on replacing my washer fluid tank (sorry Saab purists) with a much smaller one from a VW Jetta I found in the junk yard. I’ve already mounted the stock pump and fluid level indicator in the washer tank. It should fit nicely leaving me plenty of room to mount the MSD unit next to my ign. amplifier and my engine fuse box. It’s a non-DI 1988 9000T by the way. I should say my goal is better idle, running and possible longer sustained boost. Increased mileage is nice, but last on the list. Any thoughts, comments?
