If the issue of water getting to the open air filter is an issue, possibly a better alternative would be to perform the "surgery" on the stock air box that has periodically been suggested by Karl on the 9000 board. He suggests removing the restrictive "elephant trunk" air horn (which bends 180 degrees and is narrower at the opening than at the air box), and then cutting a 2 to 2 1/2 inch hole in the side of the air box; then cover the hole with some window screen mesh (to inhibit water getting in). This procedure doubles the area exposed to air (you would now have the 2 to 2 1/2 inch hole which you cut, in addition to the opening at the top of the air box (that the elephant trunk attached to).
I performed this work on the air box on my 1994 9000 Aero and have noticed a difference with the stock air filter. Next step will be to install a K&N filter and see what additional difference that this makes.
