More proper way of doing it, oil/air separator

There is definitely a positive of doing it. Any blow back from the piston will go into the crank compartment. The heated oil becomes vaporized in the new air. The air then is vented through the cyl head and ends up in your TB. Vaporized oil will accumulate in your TB and Manifold reducing airflow and it will also cause an increase chance of detonation. The oil will increase intake temps and change octane combustion.
The negative of removing the line and just popping on a filter is that the filter will quickly accumulate w/ oil and then spread all over the underside of your hood. It's quite a mess. The proper way of doing it is to construct and oil/air separator and then either venting into the atmosphere or back to the TB. With a turbo, you need a pcv valve on the separator to take it back to the TB (just use the existing one on the valve cover).
Check out the web link below. It's a subscription online mag. You need to be a member to look at all the new articles but not the old the ones. If you cursor down a little on the page you'll find the older article on how to construct the separator.
