I was in the same boat,
And I gave my gf a couple of lessons in my 900s (slightly easier because you don't have to deal with the turbo spool up), in a large empty parking lot. Some steps that helped me.
1. DO NOT GET EXCITED, they can feel it and it makes them nervous
2. Explain how the clutch thingy works, this my be a hard concept for them to understand. What i did was take her in the car and told her what my feet were doing as they were doing it. btw, explain everything.
3. Make sure she can know how to use the clutch, newbies tend to forget, tell her the next step before she needs to do it, "ok honey now press the clutch down and shift into second".
4. Do it slowly but surely. Her sister had her friend teach her on his old toyota pickup, and she was grinding like crazy when she was learning. I let my gf know that would not be the case with my car. "when in doubt press on the clutch.
5. I managed to give her about 4 lessons(15 - 30 mins each), and she now understands the clutch. And she never ground gears! Is she ready for the roads? nope. But that wasn't the point. We kinda put the her learning stick on hold until she gets back in the states. She is in the carribean now driving on the other side of the road... therefore driving on the other side of the road & stick would have been a bit much.
6. Remeber young jedi... patience :)
