It was time for a new exhaust system on my ‘98 9000 CSE, 5 speed, so of course I searched TSN archives about the subject to see what I could find. I love this board...there is so much great information here.

I sort of like how stealthy the quiet the stock exhaust system is, but I did want to see if I could reduce the back pressure, get a bit more performance, and still not have something too loud. I’m not ready to buy a 3 inch JT down pipe and 3 inch cat yet, but I did want to get the exhaust system ready to accept that upgrade when I get around to it. Several people on this board suggested a 2.5 inch system downstream of the cat would suffice, so that’s what I decided to go with. After speaking to the guys at Spintech, I finally decided to go with a 2.5 inch Spintech Sportsman Street XL muffler (their quietest muffler) at the normal position in the rear, and one of their resonators in place of the stock Saab resonator. They assured me that the resonator was put there originally by Saab for a reason, so it would be a good idea to use one. They also said it would not increase back pressure in the system. I explained to him that many people on this board went with a straight pipe to a rear muffler, and complained about popping and loud “jet” sounding noises, and he said the resonator would probably help them too. The resonator is quite small (3” X 6” X 9”), so if your system with straight pipe in the middle is too loud, adding a resonator wouldn’t be too much trouble and may help.

I am very happy with my new 2.5 inch system. I’d like to be able to say I can feel faster spool up, and in the seat of the pants kick, but I guess I’m just not that sensitive to the changes I got. With 225 HP stock, I’m pretty happy with what I have already. It is not loud by any means. It has a very deep sound, that I can hear at cruise, but just barley. It’s just one step louder that the stock system. If you want louder sound, Spintech has other mufflers to accomplish that. But I still would stick with that resonator.
