show signs of oil in the coolant reservoir(chocolate milk), coolant in the oil sump(chocolate milk), white reidue on one or more of the plugs, and possibly the smell of coolant out the tailpipe. Not to mention the possibility of running rougher than normal.
If there is a leak, does it leave puddles? It could be hoses, radiator, heater control valve, and doesn't the intercooler also run coolant through it? A pressure test of the system could find the leak. Have it checked out by a mechanic before you spend the money if you can't narrow the search yourself. It might give you an idea of what kind of money will have to spend on repairs. Good negotiating tool.
How much coolant does the owner say it is going through? If no leak is found, what are the chances the thermostat is causing the overheat?
Just some things to consider. Good luck.
