You could run the car with the heat wide open and the fan on full. Add distilled water to the coolant. The more water the better the cooling capacity of the mix. It shouldn't overheat on the high way. My experience with overheating is usually from one of a few common things.
1. Bad therostat, very easy to change. I would get the one that opens at a cooler temp to replace.
2. Bad fan relay switch that keeps the fans from turning on when the coolant temp gets too high. This usually causes a car to overheat around town or after it has been run hard on the highway and then you come off and get stuck in traffic or around town. Can be alleiviated by cranking the heat with the fan on high in emergency situations.
3. Check the tension on the belt to the water pump. If it is loose or slipping it may not be turning the water pump fast enough.
4. You can get a fan relay that comes on at a lower temperature as well.
A good addition to any turbo that spends hot summers around town.
5. You could always take the grill off for the initial trip home to improve air flow.
6. Check the space in between the AC condensor and the radiator. Sometimes that space will get clogged with leaves and keep the air from getting to the radiator.
I would go for it and just keep my eye on the gage and have a cell phone handy just in case you need a tow. Pick a nice cool dry day to make the drive.
