...'91 on the strongest, (somewhat) beefed up internals all round. Not the strongest trans in the world (the relatively huge power loss though the trans must go somewhere, and there's little space inside. That, and the Saab trans engineers always had a tough time dealing with whatever their colleagues at engine development came up with... ;-) but as Damien said, as long as you don't drag race, power shift, smoke up your front tires on a regular basis, etc. you'll be fine for whatever power you _want_ to have on a FWD daily car... Saab reckoned the later 900 pinion bearings to be reliable up to 255-260 flywheel hp from a boosted 900 engine, most runers reckon the older boxes to be good up to 220-230 (that's why both Trent's and Abbott's upgrade kits for 900T16's are rated at 220 hp: "we don't want our customers to blow up their gearboxes - if they do so, most will say it's _our_ fault" siad Graham Cowland of Trent Saab once.
My personal take? As long as you're not into quarter mile time bragging (sorry, can you tell I'm from Europe?), drive like an adult on road _and_ track and are comfortable with the fact that you won't get a 200,000 mile trans life with considerately upgraded engine power, the later Saab 5-speed will be fine, mostly. As I see it, 250-275 flywheel hp will give both the front wheels and your trans a fightnig chance to cope ;-)
