I'm about to install a K&N cone filter on my otherwise stock '94 9000 Aero...does anyone see any problems with the following method? Instead of leaving it inside the engine compartment as Swedish Dynamics instructs, I aim to put it in the fender for colder air. To do this, I plan to remove the outer half of the airbox (the half which contains that big snorkel-like thing), but leave the cap with the clips that joins the hose coming from the turbo to the airbox and the inner half of the airbox. I found a rubber adapter at Home Depot for joining a 3" pipe to a 2" pipe. Conveniently, with a slight bit of modification, the 2" end fits quite snugly into that cap. This of course decreases the inside diameter of that ~2" long section to approximately 2.25 inches (a decrease of 3/8"). The larger end of the adapter fits sungly on the K&N and can be hose clamped for extra tightness. I am thinking if I need to push the air filter farther out into the fender to clear the inner half of the airbox, I can add a small piece of 3" PVC as an extension.

Am I removing one bottleneck and just adding another in the process, or will that slightly decreased diameter not be a problem? I like how this approach requires no modification of any of the car's stock parts so it could relatively quickly/easily be restored to stock condition.

Here is a picture of how that adapter fits in there. The open end visible is where the K&N would go on (or a small PVC extension and then the filter).
