I did it to a head when I had an 8v a long while ago - I was biulding a new engine at the time and I thought I may as well have a go,. As it turns out there were some quite nasty casting burs in the ports but more significantly the inlet valves had a large lip where they met the head - I ground these out flush with a small grinding wheel on a drill - very carefully as if you slip you will ruin the seating surface. I'm not sure if all 8v heads have this lip though. Anyway the car went like a rocket but thats probably more due to the whole engine being rebiult with a new turbo as well! - though the head work must have done a bit.
