IMHO he was never much into the post 99 cars - his specialty has always been the stroker and V4 cars, and while TSJ did have articles on later cars, by and large the implied focus was always on the vintage rides...
When I was up visiting him a couple years back his son had just purchased the Impreza. IIRC it was an Outback Sport but could have been an RS. Either way, he was gushing about it at the time - the only thing I had to point at was my $450 5-door that had made it over the mountains to visit him... :)
Anyway, people's tastes change, and sometimes when a car or brand loses that je ne sais quoi owners move on. Case in point - I've got nothing against newer Saabs, but they don't excite me the way the older cars do. What I find appealing about a Saab just isn't there in the newer ones, so chances are my next car will be something else. I'm sure with Jack what he found appealing in Saabs faded out with the '70s, and now he's moved on. That's fair enough.
His response was perhaps a little terse, but he's entitled to his own opinion...
