although they have recently diversified themselves from the automotive parts business, TRW is/was a big player for a lot of auto part segments, one of them being suspension components. TRW made a lot of components for Euro cars too, as you've discovered, Saab being one.
On any quality ball new ball joint, typically you can't move the spindle by hand out of the box, but whack it once with a hammer and watch it wiggle around. Most don't new out of the box, but some do. does not mean it's bad per se.
Based on my experience, I would really go back and look at your assembly before I would suspect a bad part. I'm not saying that defective parts don't happen, but I would play the odds.
