ECUs are the same... Part numbers and everything.
As far as SPGs go, yeah, the earlier ones had 165 and the later ones 175 - only the CE and '94 convertibles had 185 from the factory. The Red Box originally supplied 175hp (through '90 or something) then went to 185hp.
These modest hp increases are not enough to upset the factory FI ECU. Remember that even with the factory ECU 200-220hp is totally attainable... My '90 SPG makes 200hp with only modest APC tweaks and virtually no other mods - even the stock exhaust and airbox! It's when you start pushing beyond that you'll run into trouble, and that's mostly to be expected...
