We have a 2000 LW2 with the V6. The tires that come on it are awful so we replaced them almost immediately. The new tires make a huge difference. I had a very difficult time keeping up with my wife in the LW2 while in my 9-3SE. That's what got me started modifying the Saab 9-3.
The Saturn is rather quick and corners well with the right tires. I've seen as low as 7.4sec 0-60. We actually picked it over the 9-5 because, although the 9-5 is nicer, the base and SE 9-5s just didn't cut it suspension-wise.
I would really love a Saab 9-5 Aero but couldn't talk the sales guys down from $40K. Maybe next time.
ps. I broad-sided a dump truck in a 1995 Saturn SL2 at 45mph and was able to drive it away. They towed the dump truck away. These cars are safer than they are perceived to be but still not in the realm of the Saabs. (I hate the Saturn headrests).
Enough venting. I think the L series is a like a well kept secret. It doesn't do anything that annoys me (that's a big deal) and it's essentially a "sleeper". I'd still take a 9-5 Aero but the price difference and dealer experience didn't seem worth it.
