The three wire units have an electrical heating element to get them up to operating temperature faster. This gets the mixture under control much sooner in the warm up cycle to reduce emissions. It also makes the sensors last a long time. The single wire units used to be relatively short lived. But it seems that the three wire units last indefinately. So if you are getting good mpg's its is probably running was well as a new unit.
Note that the O2 sensor averages the gases from all 4 cylinders. If you have one or two injectors that are running lean, the ECU and semsor will seek the same end point, which would make the other cylinders run richer and the lean ones would be less lean. But the lean ones will be the first to knock and the APC will take action.
Remove and inspect the plugs. Any cylinder to cylinder differences in color and deposits should be a concern. A heavy duty fuel system cleaner such as Techron might eliminate the problem. If the plugs look different, then efforts to refine the AF mixture via a AF meter may be undermined.
I would check the plugs and then probably use Techron Concetrate in any case, the see how the meter reacts with the existing sensor.
I replaced my sensor at 108,000 miles strictly as PM. I got a cheap unit and cut its leads and soldered them in. Saved a bundle. The rational was the if the stock unit failed and the dealer replaced the sensor it would cost an arm and two legs. With the new unit there was no change in power or mpg's.
