Hi,
I run my 97 9000 Aero with stock springs (brand new though) and Bilsteins all around. I made the same "judgement call" as you concerning clearance, load capability and "looks" (I like the stock look as it enhances the "sleeper" factor of my car).
What decided my choice was that I don't "need" the adjustability of the Konis and that I got a set of Bilsteins really, really cheap. Also, on the 9000, the Konis are only adjustable in the rear if they are removed so that feature is not relevant.
It works like a charm. The "heavy" feeling of the car during cornering is gone. It really corners like on rail. I would estimate (from comparing with friends with similar cars and only lowering springs) that it corners much better than cars that are only lowered.
I would also recommend replacing the rear bush in the front wishbone with polyurethane equivalents as they greatly improve the car's straight line tracking. As you remove the shocks you need to do a wheel alignment anyway, so there's a point to doing both at the same time.
You'll love your "new" Aero.
/ Karl
