Drive a 2.0l 9000T from '86-90 or so, then you'll see what lag is. Nail the throttle at 2000 rpm, and note how you won't get to max boost until about 3000 rpm. Whereas, if you nail the throttle when you're already at 3000 rpm, you'll be to max boost instantly, by comparison.

It helps to have the base timing advanced, but there still is quite a bit of lag at low RPM, quite unlike the 2.3l 9000T, which has a smaller turbo that spools up faster, in addition to simply having more air coming out of the engine to act on the turbine exhaust wheel in the first place.

The term 'turbo lag' has been beaten to death by bad connotations, in my mind somewhat unjustified. If you look at the torque output at a given RPM, a turbo, especially a Saab turbo, will almost always produce significantly more torque than a NA 4 cyl. or V6. Let's see, I can have my max torque available at 3000 rpm, or 1800 rpm for the 2.3l engines, or hmm, I can wait until 5000 or 6000 or 7000+ rpm from a NA engine. Torque is greater than HP at ANY rpm before 5252, so I'd rather take my extra does of torque, and by deduction, HP, before that RPM, thank you.

If you nail the gas on a Honda at 2000 rpm, isn't there an equal amount of lag before the car really gives you good acceleration? Sure, you can downshift, but who says you can't do that in a turbo? The idea behind a turbo is that you don't NEED to downshift to extract adequate amounts of power.

Anyway, you knew all this beforehand. :) I'd be very surprised if your '97 Aero EVER had half of the lag that my '87 9000T has.
