Air dams are exactly that...they dam air in front of the car rather than allowing it to slide under the car...the dams increase drag in one sense, but decrease drag associated with air sliding under the rough underbody of the car...net result can be decreased drag. Another effect is to decrease the air pressure under the car (increase the low pressure area is also possible phrasing), I haven't used a manometer or pressure transducer to measure the actual pressure decrease, but sounds right....air gozaround side/can't go under, therefore decreased pressure under car!
Point is that, however the front end gets more force on the ground, rolling resistance of tire goes up.
If I had to choose between the increased rolling resistance and the air dam...no argument. The increased stability at speed is well worth any decrease in mileage and my guess is that the decreased underbody drag more than offsets rolling resistance increase.
If you ever drove a 280Z without a front spoiler above 120-125 mph (it gets, ummm, REAL light!) you'd never drive a car without a front air dam again....
