Agree with you that 90% (probably more like 98%) of buyers wouldn't have a clue about this. It's too bad, though, that they can't offer it as an option. Wouldn't have to involve a lot of R&D, just a phone call to Quaife and say "hi we'd like to offer your diff as an option in our car".
BTW, you don't have to have driven a tractor to know locking diffs! My '85 and '87 Audi 4000 Quattros (and other Audi models of that era) have a switch in the console that lets you manually lock the diffs. First position locks the center, 2nd position also locks the rear. Don't know if it's still the case, but M-B's "Gelandewagen"(sp?) had a similar system that also lets you lock the front.
It's the best AWD system I've ever used - haven't seen a fluid coupling or computer yet that can look at the road 1/2 mile in front of you and say "hey, that looks slippery, let's lock it up"!
