Questions:
1. Is 2 1/4 inch diameter piping (mandrel bends?) sufficient for a mild to hot 16V NA engine?
2. The factory exhaust manifold looks reasonably well designed, would I get much benefit from installing a set of headers (extractors)?
3. Is it possible to get good performace from a sports exhaust without excessive noise? If so what are the tricks to doing this?
Some background info:
Over the last few months I have had several cracks and leaks appear and repaired in my exhasut system, suggesting that the whole system needs replacing.
The car is a 89 900i, non turbo 16V. At present the only mod is a K&N pod filter sitting beside the radiator with custom plumbing to the MAF metre and intake runners. Oh yeah, and a set of sway bars....
I am thinking of replacing the exhaust with a custom made 2 1/4 inch system, from the headers onwards. As I am in Australia, ready made sports systems are relateively rare and expensive, hence I may as well get one custom made, from the headers onwards.
Ultimately I plan to run the car with a custom programmable computer, 2.3l head, some port and valve work, and a smallish turbo, roughly in that order. The turbo is still a few years away and I am keen to drive the car in track events before this, hence I am not going straight for a 3 inch exhaust system. I am also planning not to use wild cams because of the turbo.
Noise: Provided that the car is not excessively loud I don't care what it sounds like, but it would be nice to have a fastish car without the ususal loud exhaust. Obvioulsy with a 3 inch system for the turbo it will become a little louder :o)
Cheers
Justin
