Saab switched from the all metal intercoolers (which only came on 85 turbos) to the plastic capped ones because the metal end tanks absorb more heat from the engine bay and in turn contribute to increased intake temps. The plastic end tanks won't get nearly as hot. Around model year 89 when saab started using the larger intercooler pipes with the smoother bends they also started using a revised intercooler with larger passages for the air. check out this picture it clearly shows the difference. If I were you I would try to pick up one of the 89 plus intercoolers. If you plan on running signifigantly higer boost levels then stock then it doesn't matter which version of the stock intercooler you use they will all be inefficient.
