My guess would be that he did it to have less rotating mass, the 900 stuff is justa justa bit (.5" / 13mm or so) smaller in diameter, and I guess you save about a pound on the pressure plate.
Also want to add comments regarding compressor wheel size. I'm very happy with just my T3-60, sourced from the very helpful guys at Turbonetics - http://www.turboneticsinc.com. Another local SPG owner has a wheel spec'd for a Buick GN, and that one's just a tad bigger than my -60. Good stuff, the -60, with free flow exhaust, I notice no more lag, and when you put your foot down in it...yeehaw, nice stuff, especially at the top end.
