In a former life I drove a Pontiac TransBird with a small block chevy. These are all around great engines. An LT1 engine from a 1990s Corvette or Z28 would probably be an even better idea because the intake plenum and runners were specifically designed to for low clearance. The plenum on those cars is actually partway under the front of the windshield if I remember correctly. And they redline around 6500 rpm. But the good thing about an American V8 is that they are soooo much cheaper than modifying Saab engine because the performance parts industry in this country is like a major source of GDP for a lot of states in this country (ie kentucky, etc) you know what I mean. My brother has $4000 engine in his pontiac, and is 375hp fuel injected. Redlines/ peak hp at 6700 rpm. I love my Saab and the 2.0 turbo, but there is nothing like a V8 with a free flowing exhaust revving near 7000 rpms. Its like the same thing with Ferraris... they get that high and they just kind of pur/scream and the torque is just so much more than you could squeeze out of a 2.0 turbo engine, and reliability would be a factor anyway.

I imagine the handling characteristics would be pretty FUBAR with a V8 in the already front-heavy Saab 900. Would be nice though to blow away some modern rice.

A 1980s TransBird engine with all computer and sensor equipment can be modified to 400hp before the fuel maps in the computer needs to be specially designed, and new injectors, etc. Those engines can be had for under $1000 easily used. Ah well, one day I will be not in college and have some real money and I wont look back, Ill probably have a acura or something boring like that.
