the resulting police speed traps you are referring to are likely the result of political pressure. imagine what all the people would think if someone was killed and there was no change. not that the resulting change actually accomplishes something, but there is a perception that it does.
same with the insurance companies. they have equated speed with accidents, but they have not shown a correlation. i'm a firm believer that if you are traveling 5-10 mph faster than traffic you are more aware of other drivers, oncoming hazards, etc. those that set cruise at the speed limit and hang out in the middle/right lane are typically oblivious to others approaching from the rear, or around them. they get somewhat numb and jaded to what's going on. this doesn't mean all people who cruise at the s.l. or those who drive a little over fit in these catagories, but my experience tells me the majority do. however, if you are doing 30+ faster than traffic, you are reducing the reaction time you have to make changes if a yahoo does something stupid in front of you. but that's why i feel there is a big difference between speeding (5-10 over, revenue generator for municipalities, cities, states, etc.) and driving wreckless (well beyond the speed of traffic, safety issue). just my thoughts.
