My Swedish Beastie, an '87 900T, has various performance mods to it, including some SPG9 goodies like the Stage II APC, RRFPR and balanced/matched oversized injectors, AID, modified wastegate actuator, Bosch hooter, etc. As others here have reported, I was getting slippage with my stock clutch when boosting into the red, particularly in higher gears.

So I decided to go with an upgraded clutch. I got a modified 9000 clutch from SPG9 with their lightened and balanced flywheel... they told me it was as good as a Centerforce clutch and would hold nicely. I just installed it this week.

My disappointment is huge. On a test boost run up a hill, this clutch slipped MORE than my stock clutch. It makes absolutely no sense to me, since the friction surface area is larger on this clutch than on the old one, and the springs are also larger. It should hold much better than the one it replaced!

My question is this: When I was installing the flywheel with the help of the good folks at Road Tested Saabs of Indianapolis, we cleaned it off with brake cleaner spray. It was very shiny! Is it possible there's some sort of coating on the flywheel causing the clutch to slip? Will it wear off in time? Will my clutch grip improve after the clutch "wears in" a little? Is there any sort of break-in period with new clutches?

I'm on a cross-country road trip as I write this, leaving Indiana (visiting Huzrjim) for points east, and will return home to Jacksonville, FL this weekend. Thus I won't be able to read or respond to your replies to this post until Sunday. At that time I'll have another 1500 miles on the car or so, and perhaps there will be a difference in how the clutch is grabbing. I also plan to talk to Dave at SPG9 soon. But please let me know what you think in the meantime.
